One of the most consolidated engineering methods for measuring strain is the extensometry. The technique uses electrical or optical resistors, known as strain gauges, which have a measureable characteristic that changes with strain.

Símeros uses intensely the extensometry technique to quantify the strain levels imposed to the equipment when external loads are applied, as in an experimental test or even in normal operation. The results obtained through extensometry can be used in the validation of numerical methods, structural integrity assessment, optimization procedures and acknowledgement of the stress level, which can be used with the predicted service life.
